Farewell, thank you and good luck

[Note: we have now left the neighbourhood. Thanks again one and all]

For nearly three years residents living on and around Southampton Way (North Peckham and North/Northeast Camberwell) have petitioned and pleaded on a number of issues related to improving the overall community. This blog offers insight into a lot of the issues and tactics used (note: previous posts are available via links down the right-hand side, the further back you go, the more former posts will appear), as well as information on how you can continue the push for improvements. Further, an email distribution group provided extensive updates and information on key issues and key contacts. Hopefully this blog and those emails provide you with a lot of information to carry on.

As the person who picked up from work done by others and initiated the blog and email group, I am moving out of the neighbourhood from mid-September 2007. If you have any questions on the status of particular projects, the history of our efforts or anything else, please leave them in the 'comments' section here (you can choose 'anonymous' to make it easier) and I will do my best to help out before my time runs out.

If anyone would like to take over the blog and/or the email group, please be in touch via forgotten_camberwell@yahoo.co.uk [I can promise to those already part of the group that I will only hand off access to your data if I feel absolutely certain the person(s) interested will treat your data with the existing level of confidentiality.]

Thank you to everyone for your help and enthusiasm in improving a community we all care about. All the best in your future battles and please be in touch if you've any questions or comments.

Good luck and farewell.

[UPDATE: Results from Cross River Tram consultation are out: The majority favoured Burgess Park to Wells Way for our leg. You can read the report here. Also, sadly a murder in Burgess Park]

Good luck and thank you so very much for everything. What is the latest on the 188 property?

Someone said to me only this weekend "But what's the point? Nothing has changed." After restraining myself from shouting at them (!) I told them that this is not the case. Yes, things move slowly but if you do nothing then nothing is exactly what happens. I think I speak for many people in the area when I say, thank you SO much for all the hard work you've put in. I'm not sure people realise quite how many hours you've devoted to the cause of trying to improve our patch. I'm sure at times it's felt like banging your head against a brick wall but it is clear we (or rather you!) have achieved many things - we've certainly been heard that's for sure!
I wish you and Stefano every happiness in your new home. Camberwell's loss is Kennington's gain.

I'm one of those huge sceptics but yes, you sure gave it a hell of a go. We're looking to move too. I think despite some progress, Southampton Way is worse than ever. Sad and by no means for lack of trying. Good luck!

Having moved onto Southampton Way only four months ago I have been following your blog intently. I hope that those who have contributed to this blog (myself included) can continue the great work you have been committed to for these past years, especially the recent issues with the 343 and getting the Tram earlier.. I am both saddened that you are leaving but happy you are heading to Kennington, an area I previously moved from!
P.S. I highly recommend the 'Dog House' on Kennington Cross, a fine drinking establishment!

Ta all - and yes, I'm in stumbling distance of The Dog House (and the tube, and supermarket, and restaurants...)

Catherine and co., I do think things have worsened on the Way, but I also think our pressure has helped. A number of things are now underway and with time, it will force change.

In particular, the mentioned 184-188 Southampton Way. It has been demolished and the hostel is shut down - huge progress. Next will be redeveloping the site.

Two contacts to check in with: Kim Humphreys (Mr)(Kim.Humphreys@southwark.gov.uk) the Executive in charge of Housing and Council Officer Jeremy Pilgrim (jeremy.pilgrim@southwark.gov.uk)

Local Councillors haven't been much help on this one (or most things, though kudos to Ian Wingfield for trying). In particular Councillor Alison McGovern has been terribly useless and her performance deserves a vote out of office (my opinion).

Other pipelines include Bricklayers (in for planning) and the Unite property, which is being sold to Unite from developer and they will continue it. 149 awaits compulsory purchase in 2008 (keep pressure up), and Elmington's final phase should see movement in the autumn.

Who would you recommend we vote for? I realise this may get you into trouble so please ignore if so. And the best of luck to you both. I've enjoyed having you as a neighbour.

Ah that's a tricky one, especially seeing as how I cannot vote :-)

I'm a registered Democrat in the US so suspect if I could vote, I'd generally tend to go Labour...probably more 'third-way' new labour (ala Clinton). That's my full disclosure.

However, I think given Southwark's landscape, Camberwell is probably in a 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' situation. The Lib Dems craftily coalitioned with the Conservatives to take power away from Labour after many years of rule. In fact, Labour still holds a majority, but not the power and the purse. Therefore, despite their best efforts, our local Labour Councillors have little power to get much done for us. I think it probably best to vote Lib Dem and hope for more than crumbs from the table.

But you'll know more in 2010 when the next election falls. You can vote on our GLA rep in 2008 - a seat currently held by Val Shawcross (Labour). I've had some tension with her (typical of me) but generally, I think she's quite a force and quite capable. Watch how the 343 unfolds and use that as a barometre in terms of how you decide to vote. Also the Cross River Tram. She's a big fan and works hard on it.

As stated above, regardless of your party, I would (right now) not re-elect Alison McGovern. I think she's been terribly ineffectual for Brunswick Park Ward and Camberwell generally. Ian Wingfield does try. Sandra Rhule has deep community roots. John Friary's heart is in the right place and he makes me laugh - in a good way. Jenny Jones and Chris Page live in our area and technically must not show conflict - but neither has really been useful for the neighbourhood, in my opinion. Chris Page was especially rude regarding our group's efforts in a public meeting. I thought that was uncalled for and unprofessional. Peter John is shadow leader of the Council but never championed our cause at any level. I challenged him to show where he argued/plead our case as shadow leader and he could not. I know his job is to oppose, it's all of there jobs in opposition, but building the odd bridge to help improve our neighbourhood wouldn't go amiss.

My honest views - and my opinions only. I'd be interested to hear what others think. I'm hardly a big political guru.

I reckon one Councillor is as bad as the next. We are moving soon too. We await a buyer, anyone interested?? Good luck Tommy and thanks for giving them hell!

184-188 SW and 2 Sedgmoor Place hostel:

The hostel has reopened to house families - the earlier closure wasn't part of the plan for redevelopment. However, it's still in the overall scheme. The aim, in outline, is to: 1. Build a new hostel behind Beacon House; 2. Demolish the existing hostel and build to accommodate Beacon House residents and possibly others; 3. Demolish Beacon House, add that plot to the 184-188 site and build a mix of housing and commercial units. The feasibility study continues and plans are expected to be produced for consultation before the end of the year.

Can I just second the vote against Ms McGovern. I too have found her terribly unhelpful and will not be casting another vote for her next time.

Good luck.

I have tried every product that is supposed to be great for curly hair. This Moroccan Oil hair line is the best I have ever tried. I have paid for inexpensive

products to very expensive products and this is the VERY BEST I have ever tried in my life, and I am in my 50's. It makes my hair soft, shiny, bouncy, and easy to manage. My hair is shoulder length. No

frizzies or heavyness. I get so many compliments and people just wanting to touch my hair. I am okay with the fragrance.
